Texas Tenor Jazz Project

Tradition in exhibition

State of the Texas Tenor (Saxophones) is a project conceived from the life experiences of Houston musician, Shelley Carrol. Shelley grew up and was influenced by many musicians who carried the torch of the “Big Tenor Saxophone sound”. This includes players like Arnett Cobb, Billy Harper, Marchel Ivery, Illinois Jaquet, Don Wilkerson, and others.

The State of the Texas Tenor current lineup features Shelley Carrol along with Jason Davis and Quamon Fowler. All three of these players have spent years studying and sharing the influence of the “Texas tenor” sound. These players also performed and studied with Texas Jazz giants like Marchel Ivery, James Clay, Onzie Matthews, David “Fathead” Newman, Roger Boykin and others.
